IPL Auction 2024: Decoding the Data Game and Discover Teams Master Plans

With the BCCI finally releasing the IPl Auction 2024 list I’ve done a little analysis to see what trends the data is showing us. The first part is auction data analysis and the 2nd part my view of what each time should be targeting for IPL Auction 2024 .

Available Slots By Franchise

Firstly let’s see what each of the 10 franchises look like going into the IPL Auction 2024. KKR are almost having to build a brand new team with just 13 players and 12 slots left to fill. On the other end of the scale SRH, RCB, CSK and LSG have just 6 and may play tactically.

Overseas Slots By Franchise

What about the much converted overseas slots? With a total of 119 overseas players registered there are only 30 slots available across the teams, DC, KKR and MI have 4 each with GT, LSG and PBKS needing just 2 overseas to complement their team IPL Auction 2024.

Purse Spent And Available

Which of our teams will be like a kid in a sweetshop splashing the cash? Despite KKR needing a whole new bowling unit its GT who have 38.15Cr to spend, replacing captain Hardik after his underhand move to MI could be a challenge. LSG with just 13.15Cr will need to shop wisely!

Team Make Up By Franchise

What sort of players are our IPL Auction 2024 on the look out for? This graph shows the make up of each team and one thing RR don’t need is a keeper as they already have 5, they do however need bowlers as they only have 2. RCB and KKR will be doing battle for bowlers.

Players Breakdown by Specialism

The franchise world seems to love an all rounder but actually 39% of those registered on the IPL Auction 2024 list are actually bowlers! With just 16% being batters, are the out and out batters a dying breed?

Player Breakdown By Specialism

Age Of Auction Players

Is IPL 2024 a young man’s game or will experience prosper over youth? Well the average age of the players listed in IPL Auction 2024 is actually 27 but we range from 17 year old Maphaka to 39 year old Nabi IPL Auction 2024.

Age Of Auction Players

Country Break Down of Auction Players

We saw earlier that there are only 30 overseas slots available, which countries do our IPL Auction 2024 players come from? Taking our India (214) we can see what England have the most players at 25 closely followed by Aus at 21, will quantity be chosen over quality?

Country Break Down of Auction Players

Bowling Type Breakdown

They say batters win you games but bowlers win you tournaments, well which bowling type is the most prominent in IPL Auction 2024? We can see that there is an abundance (61) of right arm off spinners but just 6 SLA Unorthodox bowlers, will their rarity drive up their price?

Batting Hand Breakdown

So much emphasis is put on left hand right hand combinations but are there enough lefties to go around in IPL Auction 2024? Actually just above 30% of the total players registered are lefties, could players like Head and Ravindra start a bidding war?

Auction Players by State

Looking at just our Indian players registered in IPL Auction 2024 for a moment, which state association produces the most players? Well this shows that it’s a dead heat between Mumbai Cricket Association and Punjab Cricket Association who have 13 players registered.

With more and more international T20 games are we seeing more capped players enter IPL Auction 2024? The data shows us that 116 are already capped by their country more than once whereas 217 are yet to receive international honours.

Country Breakdown By Specialism

Looking at the countries whose players have entered the auction, is there a specialism that’s more prominent to each country? Taking India out for visuals and we can see here that half of the NZ players are bowlers whereas SA have their fair share of batters for teams to pick.

Average Starting Price By Country

Do players from certain countries value themselves higher than others? This graph looks at the average starting price by country and clearly shows that AUS have given themselves the premium price tag. Whereas those with low purses might want to look at NED or ZIM players.

IPL 2024 experience is one thing but does T20i games equate into a successful IPL stint? NZ players will certainly be hoping so as they have the highest number of caps amongst their IPL Auction 2024 players. ENG are the surprise here with just 23 caps per player on average.

Average Age By Specialism

We know the trend for all rounders is growing but does that mean they are usually younger players? There actually isn’t much in it across the board with all player types sitting around the 26-27 years of age mark IPL 2024 Auction.

Average Age By Specialism

IPL Games By Specialism

Is there anything to draw from the average IPL games by player specialism? This graph shows us that that batters actually have the highest average IPL 2024 games at 27 per player and at the opposite end the wicket keepers have played the least IPL games.

T20i Games by Specialism

Does this translate into T20i games as well? In short, yes the picture is very similar across the board with batters having over 40 caps per player on average and yet again the wicket keepers at just 26 games per player. Will this impact IPL 2024 Auction?

Team Targets

Now that we’ve analyzed the data, let’s look at what each team might be targeting in the auction:

CSK:

  • Genuine all-rounder (Rachin Ravindra?)
  • Overseas pacer (Coetzee?)
  • Indian batter

DC:

  • Backup keeper (with Pant returning)
  • Domestic pacers (Tiagi?)
  • Overseas and domestic batters (need value for money!)

GT:

  • All-rounder to replace Hardik Pandya
  • Domestic batter
  • Domestic and overseas pacers
  • Consider a better wicketkeeper

KKR:

  • Domestic and overseas pace bowlers
  • Domestic keeper (backup)
  • Domestic top-order hitters
  • Backup for injury-prone Andre Russell

LSG:

  • Pace bowling all-rounders
  • High-quality pace bowlers (tough ask with limited budget)

MI:

  • Decent pace bowlers (likely overseas)
  • Decent spinner to backup Chawla

PBKS:

  • Out-and-out batters
  • Bowler who isn’t a number 11 batter (already have 3!)

RR:

  • Bowling all-rounder to replace Holder
  • Middle-order batting support

SRH:

  • World-class spinner (Hasaranga?)
  • Batter to replace Brook
  • Indian pacer

So that’s the auction data trends, how about what each team should be looking for in IPL 2024 Auction? Winners CSK have kept the core of their 2023 team and in my view they should be targeting a genuine all rounder (Rachin?), an overseas pacer (Coetzee) and an Indian batter DC let 9 players go back into the auction, some questionable so they need quite a lot with their 28 Crore. With Pant returning a back up keeper has to be high on the list along with domestic pacers (Tyagi?) and both overseas and domestic batters. They will need value for money!

Now the will he/wont he circus of Hardik is finalised, GT can turn their attention to filling gaps in the squad. Priorities are an all rounder to replace Hardik, a domestic batter and both domestic and overseas pacers. I’d be tempted to look for a better wicket keeper too Well we all know that KKR are in need of pace bowlers after releasing their whole fast bowling unit so they need to target both domestic and overseas. On top of this they need a domestic keeper as back up, domestic top order hitters and maybe a backup to injury prone Andre Russel.

LSG have the least slots available and just a small purse of 13.15Cr but they do have a few weaknesses. After letting Sam go, trading Romario to MI and Avesh to RR, pace bowling all rounders and high quality pace bowlers are a must – a tough ask in that budget.

MI are going into IPL 2024 Auction with 17Cr thanks to trading Green to RCB. For this they are going to need some decent pace bowlers, likely overseas as the domestic markets is limited. Ideally they need a decent spinner to back up Chawla as he can’t go on forever.

PBKS have a healthy budget of 29Crore with 8 slots to fill, however only 2 of those are overseas so they will need to play the domestic market well. Obvious gaps are out and out batters as well as a bowler who isn’t a number 11 batter as they already have 3 of those!

RR go into the auction needing 8 players but with a purse of just 14.5Cr their think tank will need to – well think well! Obvious weaknesses are a bowling all rounder to replace Holder (not many about) and maybe some middle order batting support IPL 2024 Auction.

Last but not least is SRH with a healthy 34Cr at their disposal courtesy of some smart releases. One thing they have to target is a world class spinner and I can see them having eyes on Hasaranga. On top of this a batter to replace Brook and an Indian pacer finish this squad.

Well that was a quick run through some of the trends from the IPL 2024 Auction list and what some of the teams might be targeting. Now onto the actual auction itself!
