5 key matches at T20 World Cup 2024

1. India and Pakistan in New York on June 9, 2024

Both teams are rivals, so it makes sense to include them. They have also played against each other in previous T20 World Cups, with the most recent match in Australia being one of the best in the tournament’s history.

With a packed house at the MCG, India won the nail-biting final ball match. However, Pakistan has recently taken home the bacon, beating India by 10 wickets in the UAE in the 2021 tournament.

This part will have extra charm because the game will take place at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. It will be the fifth game held there.

2. Canada vs. USA in Dallas on June 1,

As neighbours compete against each other on the world stage, it’s interesting to note that the USA vs. Canada match is the oldest competition in international cricket. In 1844, 33 years before England played Australia, the two teams played what is thought to be the first international cricket match. The two-inning match took place at the St. George’s Cricket Club in Manhattan and USA lost by 23 runs.

Today, there is no love lost between the teams, as shown by the many fiery matches that have happened between them in both white-ball forms. The USA helped keep Canada from playing ODIs at World Cricket League 2 in 2019, and things have gotten worse between the two teams in recent T20 matches.

In their last T20I, a Super Over was needed to decide the winner. Steven Taylor and Xavier Marshall scored 22 runs to help the USA win. The Canadian danger was stopped by Ali Khan, who held Navneet Dhaliwal and Dillon Heyliger to 14.

3. England vs. Australia, Barbados, June 8, 2024

The match will be a big deal no matter what format it is. It will take place at the Kensington Oval in Barbados, which is where England beat their traditional rivals in the 2010 event.

It’s been 13 years, and the anger is still building. Australia, who won the T20 World Cup in 2021, will play the team that wants to win the 2022 title. Jos Buttler’s team will be desperate to keep their title after a poor performance at the 2023 Cricket World Cup in ODIs.

England’s preparations went well on their December tour of the West Indies, where they scored 267/3 and 226/3 in back-to-back T20I games to show how good they are.

4. South Africa v Netherlands, New York – 8 June

South Africa has had a bad luck with this team in recent tournaments. The game will be as much a mental fight as it is a physical one over 22 yards.

In Adelaide in 2022, the Dutch shocked South Africa. At the longer Cricket World Cup in 2023, the Dutch won by 38 runs thanks to a strong Powerplay effort with the ball and a strong counterattack with the bat.

Aside from one or two players who have moved on, the teams should be the same as the XIs that played each other in Australia. South Africa will also have practice with the New York surface because they played an early game there.

5. Sri Lanka v Bangladesh, Dallas – 7 June

The two teams play each other a lot in different types of sports, but the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium field is new to both of them, which makes the match even more exciting. The winner could be the second qualifier from Group D.

In their most recent T20I match, Sri Lanka won by one run in the last over at the 2022 Asia Cup in Dubai. When the teams met at the 2021 World Cup in Sharjah, Sri Lanka won by five wickets with seven balls to spare.

The Dallas surface is known for favoring pace off, and left-arm orthodox and leg-spin are good ways to deal with the shorter border on the western side. Shakib Al Hasan and Wanindu Hasaranga are most likely to be the most important players in this match.
